Kim Yege English. Demo versions of exam in foreign languages

Increasingly, parents of schoolchildren turn to our school with a request to prepare future graduates for the Unified State Exam in English 2018. Therefore, we decided to write a detailed article in which we will tell you how to prepare for this exam: we will consider its structure and give practical advice for successfully passing each part of the Unified State Exam and present the best tutorials and online resources to prepare you for this challenging challenge.

What is the Unified State Exam in English 2018

The USE in English 2018 is the final exam at school, which counts as an entrance exam to the university, so it is so important to pass it with a high score. While this exam is not mandatory, but if a graduate is going to enter a specialized university, he needs to pass this test.

In terms of structure and level of complexity, the Unified State Exam is similar to the FCE international exam. This means that for successful delivery, the student must have a level (above average). This is a high level, so we recommend starting to prepare for the Unified State Exam in English from grade 10, then in 2 years the student will be able to master the entire required amount of material at a normal pace.

In principle, you can prepare for the exam in 1 year, but only if at the time of the beginning of the preparation the student already speaks English at the (intermediate) level. Don't know what level the graduate has? Then invite him to go through.

How is the exam in English going in 2018? The exam consists of a written and an oral part, which are held on different days. On one day, students take the written part, it includes the following sections: listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. In total, on this day, the graduate needs to complete 40 tasks in 180 minutes. A student can receive a maximum of 20 points for each section. Thus, for this day, you can score 80 points.

The second part - oral - takes place on another day and rented at will... It lasts only 15 minutes and consists of 4 tasks. On this day, a graduate can earn 20 more points. We strongly advise all graduates to take the oral part: in case of unsuccessful answers, you do not lose anything, and in case of successful - earn extra points.

Thus, a graduate can achieve a maximum of 100 points in the exam. The minimum score for passing the exam is 22 points.

Below we present a table for converting USE scores in English into a five-point system.

The USE results are usually published 14 days after passing the second part of the exam, but in some cases they are known as early as 12 days. You can find out your results on the official website of the exam by filling in all the required fields. The paper certificates of the exam were canceled in 2014, so now only electronic certificates are available.

The structure of the Unified State Exam in English 2018 and the principles of successful delivery of each part

In this chapter, we will tell you in detail what tasks the graduate will have to complete in each part of the exam. In addition, we will provide advice from our teachers who prepare students for the exam. By the way, if you are looking for a teacher who will prepare your child for the exam, take a look at. They have been doing this for several years now and have developed their own strategy for successful preparation, they know what pitfalls await in the exam, what typical mistakes schoolchildren make and how to get rid of these mistakes.

As an example, we will present you with a demo version of the USE in English, provided by the official website of the Federal Institute for Pedagogical Measurements fipi.ru.

Listening

The listening session lasts 30 minutes and consists of three parts. The first two parts are the first and second tasks, respectively, and the third part is tasks №3-9 (from the general list of 40 tasks).

Listening to the Unified State Exam in English in 2018 includes 3 audio fragments combined into one recording. The examiners turn on the recording and do not stop it until the very end, however, between the fragments there are pauses for reading the assignments and transferring the answers to the form. For each correct answer in this and other parts of the exam, the student receives 1 point. Let's take a look at what the graduate has to do in listening.

Exercise 1: 7 statements are given. The student listens to 6 statements and correlates them with statements, one of which is superfluous.

6 points.

Example:

Listening, task 1

Assignment 2: 7 statements are given. The student listens to the dialogue and determines which statements correspond to the content of the dialogue (True), which do not correspond (False), and which are not mentioned in it (Not Stated).

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Listening task 2

Assignment 3: 7 questions are given, each of them is offered with 3 answer options. The student listens to the audio recording and selects the correct answer to each question.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Listening, task 3

Our advice:

  1. When preparing for the exam, you need to do as many listening tasks as possible in the exam format... So the graduate will get used to quickly reading assignments and catching keywords in speech that will help find the right answer.
  2. When choosing an answer, you need to rely not on the words mentioned in the speaker's speech, but on the meaning of his words. So, for example, in his speech he can in one way or another mention all the answers to the task, but if you delve into what has been said, you can understand that there is only one correct answer.

Reading

Reading lasts 30 minutes and consists of 3 parts (9 tasks). For each part, we advise you to spend no more than 10 minutes in order to keep within the allotted half hour.

Exercise 1: 7 short texts (3-6 sentences in each) and 8 headings are given. You need to read the texts and select the appropriate heading for each of them. In this case, 1 heading will be superfluous.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Reading task 1

Assignment 2: Given a text with 6 gaps. Below are 7 excerpts, 6 of which need to be inserted in place of the blanks.

Maximum points: 6 points.

Example:

Reading task 2

Assignment 3: A small text and 7 questions to it are given. There are 4 answer options for each question, of which you need to choose 1 correct one.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Reading task 3

Our advice:

  1. When completing the first task, you need to look for keywords that will indicate the meaning of the text and help you find the title you need. In addition, often the main meaning of a paragraph is reflected in the first sentence, while the rest provide some small details. Therefore, in some cases, you just need to carefully read the first sentence in order to correctly complete the task.
  2. To successfully complete the second task, you need to have a good understanding of how complex sentences are constructed in English. The fact is that the missing part in most cases is part of a complex or complex sentence. For example, if a student understands that in the subordinate clause who is used for people, which for objects, and where for places, he will be able to successfully complete most of the tasks. You also need to reiterate, for example, that the infinitive is used to express purpose.
  3. In the third task, the questions are arranged in the order in which they are answered in the text. That is, the answer to the first question will be at the beginning of the text, and not in the middle or at the end, the answer to the second question will be after the answer to the first, etc.

Grammar and vocabulary

This section of the 2018 English exam tests the graduate's grammatical knowledge and vocabulary. The student is given 40 minutes to complete it. Let's see what the student has to do.

Exercise 1: Given a text with 7 words missing. To the right of the text are the words that need to be transformed grammatically (for example, put a verb at the right time) and insert in place of the gap.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Grammar and vocabulary task 1

Assignment 2: The text is given with 6 gaps. On the right are the words that need to be transformed both lexically and grammatically - to form a single-root word that matches the meaning of the text.

Maximum points: 6 points.

Example:

Grammar and Vocabulary Task 2

Assignment 3: The text is given with 7 gaps. You need to select for each of them 1 correct answer out of the four proposed.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Grammar and vocabulary task 3

Our advice:

  1. Conversion of a word in the first part, as a rule, occurs according to the following principle. If you are given a verb, you need to either use it in the correct tense, or put it in the correct form of the voice (active or passive), or form a participle from it. If an adjective is given, you must put it in the comparative or superlative degree. If you need to change a number, most likely you need to make it ordinal.
  2. The second part mainly tests the knowledge of suffixes and prefixes, including negative ones, the ability to form different parts of speech from the same root word.
  3. The third part most often tests the knowledge of word collocations, the so-called collocations. In addition, out of 4 words, you will need to choose the most appropriate in meaning, that is, you need to know the difference between similar words, to read the context.

Letter

The graduate is given 80 minutes to write and check 2 written works.

Exercise 1: Given the text of a short letter from a friend asking questions. The student needs to read it and write an answer letter: answer the friend's questions and ask him questions.

Volume: 100-140 words.

Maximum points: 6 points.

Example:

Letter, task 1

A letter to a friend is written in an informal style. The structure of this work is as follows:

  1. We design the "header"

In the upper right corner we write the address: on the top line we indicate the city, under it - the country of residence. No need to write the street and house number: This can be regarded as the disclosure of confidential information, even if the address is fictitious.

After the address, we skip 1 line and write the date of writing the letter in the same upper right corner.

Further, as usual, on the left we write an unofficial appeal: Dear Tom / Jim (the name will be given in the task). It is unacceptable to write Hello here. After the appeal, put a comma and continue to write the text of the letter from a new line.

  2. Text of the letter

We start writing each paragraph with a red line.

In the first paragraph, you need to thank your friend for the letter you received (Thanks a lot for your last letter) and apologize for not writing earlier (Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long). You can also mention some fact from the received letter.

In the fourth paragraph, you need to summarize - inform that you are finishing the letter (I’ve got to go now! It’s time for my favorite TV show), and offer to keep in touch (Take care and keep in touch!).

  3. End of letter

At the end, you need to write the final cliché phrase, after which a comma is always put: All the best, Best wishes, etc.

On the next line below this phrase, you enter your name.

Assignment 2: A statement (usually controversial) is given. The graduate writes an essay in which he discusses this topic, expresses his point of view, and also gives the opposite opinion and explains why he does not agree with him.

Volume: 200-250 words.

Maximum points: 14 points.

Example:

Letter, task 2

The essay is written in a neutral style and consists of 5 paragraphs:

  1. Introduction: we formulate a topic-problem and immediately point out that there are two opposite points of view.
  2. Your opinion: we express our point of view (one) on this issue and give 2-3 arguments that confirm it.
  3. Opposing opinions: we write 1-2 opposite points of view and give arguments in favor of their existence.
  4. We express our disagreement: we explain why we do not agree with the above points of view, and we give arguments in defense of our own opinion. However, they should not repeat the arguments from paragraph 2.
  5. Conclusion: we draw a conclusion on this topic, indicate that there are different points of view, and finally confirm our point of view.

Our advice:

  1. Adhere to the required volume. It is permissible to deviate by 10% from the specified number of words, that is, you can write from 90 to 154 words in a letter and from 180 to 275 in an essay. If a graduate writes at least 1 word less (89), he will be given 0 points for the task. If the limit is exceeded, the examiner will count 140 words in a letter or 250 in an essay and evaluate it, moreover, remove points for work in progress, assignment design, topic disclosure, etc.
  2. Avoid paragraphs consisting of one sentence, you need to supplement and justify each of your thoughts. To do this, you can use the constructions In my opinion, I believe, etc.
  3. Follow the style of your writing: Colloquial expressions like Guess what? or Wish me luck !, and your essay should be more formal. It is important not to overdo it with "informality": all kinds of well, cause and slang expressions are unacceptable.
  4. Use linking words, they make the text logical, allow you to supplement or contrast sentences.

Oral speech

The oral part of the exam is the shortest, it only takes 15 minutes. A graduate needs to have time to complete as many as 4 tasks, for which you can get a maximum of 20 points. The student hands over the assignments in front of the computer, his answers are recorded using a headset, and a countdown is shown on the screen. At the same time, there is an organizer in the audience who monitors the course of the exam.

Exercise 1: Popular science text is displayed on the screen. In 1.5 minutes you need to prepare and in the next 1.5 minutes read it expressively aloud.

Lead time: no more than 3 minutes.

Maximum points: 1 point

Example:

Oral speech, task 1

Lead time: about 3 minutes.

Maximum points: 5 points.

Example:

Speaking task 2

Assignment 3: Show 3 photos. You need to choose 1 and describe it according to the plan proposed right there in the assignment.

Lead time: about 3.5 minutes.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Oral speech, task 3

Assignment 4: 2 pictures are given. It is necessary to compare them, describe the similarities and differences, explain why the chosen topic is close to the graduate.

Lead time: about 3.5 minutes.

Maximum points: 7 points.

Example:

Speaking task 4

Our advice:

  1. Take advantage of online trainer for the oral part of the exam on the website injaz.ege.edu.ru. It completely simulates the exam, so that you will get acquainted with the format and understand exactly what you need to do, what time to fit in, etc.
  2. To complete the first part of the exam, you need take texts on different topics and learn to read them with the correct expression: speech should have pauses, logical stress, natural intonation. In addition, the graduate must fit into one and a half minutes, because the score decreases if the text is not read to the end. However, one should not rush either, because it is not the speed of reading that is tested, but the ability to expressively read the text.
  3. To successfully complete the second task, you need learn to ask questions to different texts... In principle, the task itself is elementary, most of the mistakes are associated with the loss of an auxiliary verb or its incorrect agreement with the noun. This problem is easily solved by doing the question-formulation exercises many times.
  4. In the third task, the examinee needs to choose 1 photo out of 3 proposed and describe it. Here's our top tip - read the assignment carefully... The fact is that it changes slightly every year, so learn to respond accordingly to the wording of 2018. In 2018, graduates will have to describe a photo to a friend, that is, an appeal to him should sound in a monologue. In addition, it is necessary answer all questions in the assignment for example, if it says where and when the photo was taken, you need to answer both where and when questions. At the beginning, it is imperative to inform about which photo will be discussed (I’ve chosen photo number ...). Don't forget about the opening (Would you like to have a look at my picture? / I'd like to show you a picture from my photo album.) And the closing (That's all for now. / I hope you liked my picture.) phrases that make speech logical.
  5. In the fourth task you need to do the main emphasis in speech is on comparing pictures rather than their description. In this case, it is necessary use speech cliches: The first picture depicts ... whereas / while the second picture depicts ..., The main difference is that ..., In comparison to the first picture, this one ... etc. Learn Phrases for Comparison and Contrast with our article.

Changes in the exam in English in 2018

Due to the fact that significant changes were made to KIMs of various subjects in the 2016-2017 season, many graduates and teachers are closely following the news.

We hasten to educate - in 2018 the structure of exams in foreign languages will not be changed. Only minor amendments and clarifications will be made to the content of the CMM.

As in the previous year, the structure of the USE 2018 in English will consist of two blocks:

  • writing part;
  • the oral part.

The oral and written exams will take place on different days!

Writing structure

The written part of the exam consists of 40 tasks, divided into 4 sections:

  • listening (questions 1-9);
  • reading (questions 10-18);
  • letter (questions 19-38);
  • vocabulary and grammar (questions 39-40).

The work takes 180 minutes to complete.

It should be noted that there are no tests in the new tickets. The simplest are now questions with a short answer (indicating a number, letter or word).

The tickets are built on a multi-level principle and include tasks that correspond to the three main levels of English proficiency for countries in which it is not native:

The high level (B2) includes tasks that require a complete understanding of the text read, as well as item 40 from the "Letter" block - a short essay with reasoning on a given topic.

Oral structure

The oral part of the exam (speaking) takes place in specially equipped language laboratories or computer classrooms, where each place is equipped with a special headset. The test takes only 15 minutes. During this time, the student must demonstrate an understanding of oral speech and the ability to conduct a dialogue.

Calculating USE scores in English

For the successful completion of the written part, the graduate can gain a maximum of 80 primary points. For passing the oral part - 22 more points. When calculating the total score, the results are added together.

In 2018, when assessing the Unified State Exam in English, the primary scores will be converted to a five-point system according to the table:

It should be borne in mind that the minimum threshold for passing (22 points) does not provide an opportunity to enter a university, but is only a necessary condition for obtaining a certificate. For information on the minimum passing scores in subjects required to enter a particular faculty of the university you have chosen, look for the official website of the educational institution.

Dates of the exam in English

A draft schedule for the final tests for 11th grade graduates has already been drawn up. If no changes are made to the established calendar before the start of the Unified State Exam 2018, then the exams will be conducted on the following dates:

Graduates of 2017-2018 can focus on the main period of the Unified State Exam.

Previous graduates and those with a valid reason to postpone the test date can apply to take the exam early.

The September stage is the last retake, to which persons are allowed whose result was not accepted for technical reasons (not through their fault) and those who could not take part in the main session of the USE for a good reason.

Preparation for the exam in English

Most of the teachers tune high school students to the fact that they need to decide on their future specialty and choose the desired university in the 10th grade. This approach makes it possible to find out in advance what subjects need to be emphasized in order to successfully pass the exam.

But, even if the decision to pass the English language was made not so long ago, you have every chance to prepare well for the final test, because there is still more than half of the academic year ahead.

Where to begin?

  • Get acquainted with the structure of tickets and typical tasks.
  • Find your weak points and engage in self-education.
  • Practice and practice again.

There are many tutorials online that will help you review the basic rules and prepare well for the writing part. This year's trial versions and last year's assignments will be indispensable in preparation, because in 2018 the structure of USE tickets in English will not change.

Practice is required to pass the oral exam. You can get it by enrolling in group preparation courses for the Unified State Exam or simply by communicating a lot with native speakers. But keep in mind that the exam will offer the classic version of the language, and friends on the Internet may be native speakers of different regional dialects.

unified state examination
in FOREIGN LANGUAGES

1. Purpose of examination work

Control measuring materials allow to establish the level of mastering by graduates of the Federal component of the state educational standard of basic general and secondary (complete) general education.

The results of the unified state exam in a foreign language are recognized by general educational institutions in which educational programs of secondary (complete) general education are implemented, as the results of state (final) certification, and by educational institutions of secondary vocational education and educational institutions of higher professional education - as the results of entrance examinations in a foreign language. language.

2. Documents defining the content of the examination paper

1. Federal component of state standards of basic general and secondary (complete) general education, basic and specialized level (order of the Ministry of Education of Russia dated 05.03.2004 No. 1089).

2. Sample programs in foreign languages // New state standards in a foreign language. Grades 2-11 / Education in documents and comments. M .: AST: Astrel, 2004.

3. Programs of educational institutions. English for 10-11 grades of schools with in-depth study of foreign languages. M .: Education, 2003.

4. Programs for educational institutions. German for general education schools with in-depth study of the German language. M .: Education: MARCH, 2004.

5. Programs of educational institutions. French for grades 1-11 schools with in-depth study of foreign languages. M .: Education, 2001.

6. Programs of educational institutions. Spanish for 5-11 grades of schools with in-depth study of foreign languages. M .: Education, 2005.

When developing CMMs, the following are also taken into account:

7. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. MSLU, 2003.

3. Approaches to the selection of content, the development of the structure of the KIM USE

The purpose of the unified state examination in a foreign language is to determine the level of the foreign language communicative competence of the examinee. At the same time, the main attention is paid to speech competence, i.e. communication skills in different types of speech activity: listening, reading, writing, as well as language competence, i.e. language knowledge and skills. Sociocultural knowledge and skills are tested indirectly in the sections "Listening", "Reading" and are one of the measurement objects in the section "Writing"; compensatory skills are tested indirectly in the "Letter" section.

Consequently, the KIM USE in foreign languages contains the sections "Listening", "Reading", "Grammar and vocabulary" and "Writing". It should be borne in mind that, although the sections "Listening", "Reading" and "Writing" have skills in the corresponding types of speech activity as objects of control, these skills are provided with the necessary level of development of the language competence of the examinees. The successful completion of tasks for the control of receptive types of speech activity is ensured by the knowledge of lexical units, morphological forms and syntactic structures and the skills of their recognition / recognition. The tasks of the "Writing" section require from the examinee, in addition to this knowledge, the skills of operating lexical units and grammatical structures in a communicatively meaningful context. Spelling skills are subject to control in tasks B4-B16 in the "Grammar and vocabulary" section, as well as tasks C1, C2 in the "Writing" section.

4. The structure of the KIM USE

The examination paper contains sections "Listening", "Reading", "Grammar and Vocabulary" and "Writing".

To differentiate the examinees according to the levels of proficiency in a foreign language within the limits formulated in the Federal component of the state standard of general education in foreign languages, all sections include, along with tasks of the basic level, tasks of higher levels of complexity.

The difficulty level of tasks is determined by the difficulty levels of the language material and the skills tested, as well as the type of task.
The work on a foreign language includes 28 tasks with a choice of answers out of three or four proposed, 16 tasks of an open type with a short answer, including tasks for establishing a correspondence, and 2 tasks of an open type with a detailed answer.

The basic, advanced and high levels of complexity of the USE tasks correspond to the levels of proficiency in foreign languages defined in the documents of the Council of Europe 1, as follows:

  • Basic level - A2 + 2
  • Increased level - B1
  • High level - B2

1 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. MSLU, 2003.

2 Since the entire possible spectrum of levels of proficiency in a foreign language is represented in the Council of Europe document by only six levels, it is obvious that certain sublevels can be distinguished within each of them. The designation of the basic level of the exam as A2 + means that from the description of the A2 level for the preparation of tasks of the basic level, developers are guided by descriptors that lie closer to the B1 level, and not to the A1 level.
............................

There are documents that regulate the structure and content of CMM - codifiers and specifications. A complete list of questions that can be controlled in the unified state exam of 2018 is given in the codifier of content elements and requirements for the level of training of graduates of educational organizations for the unified state exam of 2018 in English.

The purpose of this manual is to help students in grades 10-11 and applicants as soon as possible prepare for the final certification in English in the form of a unified state examination (USE). It can also be useful for teachers who will find in it the necessary material to work in the classroom.
The collection contains training options for the written part of the examination paper, which can be used as practical material for preparing for the exam. The manual is focused on adaptation to test control technologies, taking into account their new format and content.
Test options are identical to the CMM (test and measurement options) USE in English and consist of four sections ("Listening", "Reading", "Grammar and vocabulary", "Writing"), which include 40 tasks.
Section 1 ("Listening") contains 9 tasks, of which the first is for matching and 8 tasks with the choice of one correct answer out of the three proposed. The recommended time to complete this section is 30 minutes.
Section 2 ("Reading") contains 9 tasks, of which 2 tasks are for matching and 7 tasks with the choice of one correct answer out of four proposed. The recommended time to complete this section is 30 minutes.
Section 3 ("Grammar and vocabulary") contains 20 tasks, of which 13 tasks with a short answer and 7 tasks with a choice of one correct answer out of four proposed. The recommended time to complete this section is 40 minutes.
Section 4 ("Letter") consists of two tasks and is a small written work (writing a personal letter and a written statement with elements of reasoning). The recommended time to complete this section is 80 minutes.
The total time for the written part of the exam is 180 minutes.
Within each section, tasks are arranged according to the principle of increasing complexity from basic to high level, which must be taken into account when allocating time for their implementation. The proposed options will allow you to get an idea of the structure of the exam, the number, form and complexity of tasks, and help you develop the right strategy for preparing for the exam.
After completing the tasks of each of sections 1-3, do not forget to transfer your answers to Answer Form No. 1. When completing the tasks in the "Letter" section, the full answer must be recorded in Answer Form No. 2.
The oral part of the exam is optional (Appendix 1). It includes 4 tasks: reading a short text aloud, asking five keyword-based questions for an ad, describing one of the three photographs, and comparing two photographs based on the proposed outline. The total response time (including preparation) is 15 minutes.
After completing all the tasks, you can check your answers with the keys presented in Appendix 3. The manual also contains texts for listening (Appendix 2) and possible answers to the tasks "39" (a letter of a personal nature) and "40" (an essay with elements reasoning). It is not recommended to memorize the presented answer options, since in the criteria for evaluating writing assignments, special attention is paid to the ability of the examinee to independently produce a detailed written statement.
